Ok, so as mu life gets busier now that my son has started to crawl, I still find time to find inspirations from the art, fashion and design world. I still try to sneak in a few minutes to see what's going on in terms of trends, what's hot in jewelry and what are people talking about. So, in this search, I came across this watch store. Oh, did I ever mention to you that I looovee watches. Yes, I do my darlings, and I have a special thing for picking just the right one - the one that will take my breath away and sit on my hand as a handsome conversation piece.

The store is DEDEGUMO. Enough said. These watches are handcrafted by trained Japanese technicians who make customized watches for you- just the way you like em'. And you thought only cupcakes could be customized! ha! And, best of all, you can see the whole process take place inside the store. So, what are you waiting for? In need of a special gift for your Dad's 50th? Or something unique for that trendy best friend of yours? Look no further, darlings, look no further.

Which also makes me think - what if we launched customization at Banno Raani. How would that fly? Will our current and potential customers find this as a unique feature? And, by customization, I don't mean putting initials on the jewelry, but more so creating a pair of earring that matches your dress or your wicked cool fashion idea. Huh? huh? What do you think? Why was I absent?

Wow, it has been a while! Must say, everything looks so different!! Nah, jk! How have you been my lovelies?
Well, when I talk about "different", its actually my life that is best described by that word. Before, I delve deeper into this, let me take a moment to apologize for not writing for sooooo many months. Trust me, it was hard for me to be away, but I had no option. The priorities shifted a bit, but things are coming to a different paradigm now and thus, I am sitting on my PC, typing this.
We're good now?
Ok, so here's the different part explained: I am a mother now!! woohoo! Ah-hah, ah-hah! My son was born in January and my life, my schedule has been tightly knotted into his every cry, smile and cuteness. I just cannot be without him - no don't worry, I do give him a chance to be on his own for some time, so its not like I am a sticky-pesky mom! I just loveeee him and my experience as a mother has had its share of up's and downs. Yes, I have had episodes where I bawled like a baby myself, got frustrated, questioned my abilities to be a good mother, yelled at Kartik for no sane reason, cried some more...you name it. But, I think I came out of it pretty ok.
SO, now that you know, does that make you forgive me for my absence? Good. Let's move on to brighter things.

Dreams...and Baby Shower

I am reading the new book by Rhonda Byrne called The Power, and I must say that this book has been written just for me..as if its speaking to me and only me. Oh, its that good.
I know some of you may roll your eyes and think, "Ya sure, do you really think all that positive thinking and all works?" And my resounding reply to such skeptics is, "Ofcourse it does....just try the teachings/suggestions in the book for once." Its that good and I am so blessed to have come across this book at a time when I needed it the most. So go ahead, and give it a try - just browse it and decide if you would like to buy it or not....you oughta' have that much power :)

Embracing the newness - The Dulhan Expo update

We got up early to embrace the exhibition day in front of us. Yes, there was nervousness mixed with some leftover sleep because it was the first time Banno Raani was participating in Dulhan Expo (aka Bridal Expo).
Kartik and I were supposed to pick up Shikha and Dhruv and proceed to the venue from there. On the way to Shikha's place, my sleep vanished as I recalled that they had a fabulous bagel place close to their house, and within minutes, no seconds, I was ordering (yes, when it comes to food, my requests become more like orders) Kartik to get me my favorite hand rolled cinnamon bagel with ofcourse vegetable cream cheese. And, he being a sweetheart who knows me really well, obliged with a simple nod . And, then I added with a smile and batting eyelashes, Hey, you can't go to a super event empty stomach, right right? So, Kartik dropped me off to Shikha's place and went to get me my delish stuff.
In the meantime, Shikha and I debated about the inventory to carry, stormed back and forth on how we would work our booth, joked about totally random things and then calmly sat down to relax. Kartik was back by then with the desired deliciousness and we were ready to roll.
We arrived at the venue with anticipation in our hearts, twinkle in our eyes and bags in our hands. We can do this, I whispered to Shikha and off we went unpacking and decorating our booth. It took us some time, but we were ready and then we just sat there. The event crowd was very thin at the beginning and we began to question. But, then like an unexpected wave crashing at the shore, the crowd came and swept us with it. There was buying and bargaining and I think Shikha and I did a decent job of handling the burgeoning crowd.

So, to all the lovelies who visited us, a big HUGE THANK YOU for supporting us and becoming our clients. We couldn't have done it without you and always appreciate your business! You make us love what we do even more :)

UPDATE: Pics added. In one, you will notice food plate, well, let's just say, we needed that!

Like any human being, I have days when I complain, fret, get angry and then cry. On those days life seems so hard and edgy that I want to fly away from everything and just be with myself. I kid you not, I feel like going away on a mountain and dwelling in a cave for a few days just so I can clear my mind out - sans distractions of any kind - make peace with my mind and become good friends with it so we can party together :)
And, then there are days when all seems bright and cheery, life feels full of good things, happy feelings and sweet candies. Its days like these that make me realize how blessed I am. And for that, I am truly truly thankful. Days like these make me forget about the the dark gloomy days of stress - as if they only exist in my imagination. And everyday, I ask God to give me strength to recognize more sweetness in each day than edginess, to be more grateful for such a wonderful life than complain about my hair being poofy, to be a better person than get angry and cry.

Oh, and, here's a pic of something that I am sooo grateful for..no, seriously! :)

Nose Job

Smell. Aroma. It can do wonders. It can take you back in time to a memory that stands very close to your heart. It can even instill a sense of fear, if it has too. And, then what about it playing acrobatics with your appetite?

Well, there are certain smells that truly make me feel like a kid again and I am always left with that longing to latch on to my childhood. Its like I want to relive the moment again, want to be that goofy kid again. Something similar happened with me this morning. As I was going out to get banana from the food store, I passed by my entrance lobby - the usual thing to do. But, the smell in that lobby stopped me in my tracks - in a good way. It was a perfect blend of coffee, cinnamon and cologne. Oh, it was so clean and crisp I could actually taste it! Anywho, so this smell has special association for me and immediately I was carried over to a 13 year old Shivika standing in an airport in Singapore who is trying to figure how everything is kept so clean and smelling good {I grew up in Delhi, India so the smells weren't all that pleasant... all the time :) }. And, then wondering if that coffee that smells soooo darn divine actually tastes that divine. Yes, I was taken back to my 13 year old self who was relishing the sweet, crisp smell of wonderment, of cleanliness and ofcourse of deliciousness. A moment when every little thing mesmerized me and intoxicated me with its aromatic fumes. I remember being so entranced with this world of beautiful smells that I decided I didn't want to live in Delhi anymore. Can you imagine?

That was then.

Oh, and just so I could whiff the same smell again in the lobby, I pretended I couldn't get signal on my phone, and stood still in the lobby so I could inhale some more of that memory and relive my 13 year old self!

Lakme Fashion Week

As some of you may already know, Lakme Fashion Week - Autumn/Winter is going on in Mumbai, India. Its an extravagant affair for fashion buffs to whet their appetite and a mela for all the Bollywood celebrities to flaunt themselves and the designers they support. Pretty interesting at times, must say! While I don't religiously follow the designers, I do however keep a quick tab on who is producing what style each season. Rendezvous with a soy burger

The light of my life, these days, has been food. So, yesterday I was craving a burger. A soy veggie burger. Ok, call me crazy, but yes, I was craving that!! To appease my growing hunger (aka monster!), Kartik took me to this awesome place in the city called Quantum Leap. Oh, lovelies I can't even describe the feeling of walking through the doors of this restaurant and knowing that what's cooking behind the kitchen door will soon take me on an heavenly palatable journey. I ordered a Grilled burger with extra dose of fries, and Kartik ordered portobello mushroom and eggplant sandwich on whole wheat with corn chips. And, then we waited. I did more than waiting. I let my right leg jiggy up and down in anticipation, and as a norm, looked around at other fellow diners and yes, what they were eating.
Once the waitress got us our course, I attacked the poor burger with a fervor of a warrior, much to the surprise (or was it?) of Kartik, who calmly put one corn chip in his mouth. Ha! So much for etiquettes! And, then ofcourse I went after the extra crispy fries - took one and dipped it nicely in the oversize dollop of ketchup that I had squirted on my plate. Yummm! The craving satisfaction was just too good, and I can actually feel the bite in my mouth as I am typing this.
Ok, so that was my rendezvous with a soy burger...if you know what I mean! Chow...errr, umm Chao!

Tennis madness

I had really wanted for Federer to get to the finals against Nadal. But, alas! Anyhow, the US Open Final match yesterday was thoroughly enjoyable and am kinda ok with Nadal winning it. He deserves it.
Oh, and sooo deep in the Tennis mode I was that I started playing Wii Tennis after seeing the match. I tried to hit like a pro, with a Federer' backhand here, Williams powerful serve there and Clisjters's footwork in between. It must been a spectacle to watch me work it out, but hey, I scored a pro ranking in the game! Yeay! I tell you Nadal has nothing on my Wii skills! :)

I think I would like to change my stance on which season is my favorite season. Well, I used to think that the hot, sizzling days of summer, with ice cream dripping in hand and sun barbecuing my skin was my favorite season. Then, something happened. The cool autumn breeze blowing through my hair and making my eyelids flutter with crunchy leaves falling all around me - stirred a warm fuzzy feeling in me. In that moment I decided, yes, Fall is my favorite season now.

Making a Statement

In recent times, there has been a radical shift towards jewelry in general. Big, bold pieces which were almost a taboo to wear in broad daylight sometime back, are now being flaunted at work, at PTA meetings, and hey even to yoga classes. What's interesting is that this style will hang around for sometime (a la 70's) because it makes even a simple T look uber-fabulous. Plus, these statement pieces come in variety of price points, color and shapes - good for just about anyone. Going forward, I predict, the designs though will be bold but very industrial or uniquely angled/cut.
To me, however, this fashion trend of big statement pieces is really not something new or unique. Well, no no darlings, I am not being missy style diva here, its just coming from Indian culture, I am used to big blings - in gold, diamond, rubies, emeralds, and what have you. In fact, if a woman does not adorn herself with big jewelry sets at weddings or even small parties at someone's house or hey, even at airport (yes, yes), then she is actually sneered at. So, yeah, lovelies, bling has been an Indian woman's mantra for centuries.
Still, I am super excited about this trend...I mean isn't it always good to have an excuse to flaunt. What say? Sharing some ka-chow pieces with you:

Like a moth to the flame

I love candles. I just looove candles. At one point, I was ordering variety pack boxes of designer candles almost every other week. Yes, yes, I guess now you can tell that I love candles. But, here's the funny part. Once I buy them, oh and they come in cute packages and votives, I hardly like to use them. Strange, na? I mean I will use maybe one or two and let the rest stay beautifully packaged in their boxes. Silly me, but what to do, I am a sucker for candles and beautiful packaging.
Anyhow, I wanted to spread some candle love, and share my favorites from tons of selection out there. Here we go.

DayNa DECKER: Very stylish with a wood wicker! Yes, it sometimes crackles when burning and the designs are very modern, minimal yet truly drool worthy. Oh, and the scents range from names like sandalrose, khaya, jacaranda blossoms, amoura, soleil. They also have a very chic line of diffusers

VOLUSPA: The intricate designs on the box is so divine that after I take out the candle, I never throw away the box or the tin box. They have a huge selection of divine scents so you can never get bored of trying each one out. Also, great gift items

JONATHAN ADLER CANDLES: First his designs make us spend big, and then he enters the candle industry! Scrumptious in their smell and presentation, these are truly luxe at its best.

Mortification comes in sizes

Well, fashion faux pas happens all the time. We, mere regular mortals, who do not have our own personal stylist hanging on to our every whim and fancy, tend to become a little laid back while matching stuff. Ha, sometimes such faux pas definitely makes for a style statement in a funny-cool sense, I mean isn't that how fashion trends are invented! And, ofcourse, it also makes for some wide-eye, wider mouth responses from strangers we really do care about. Funny!
So, while I have been victim of such faux pas once in a while...nothing could come close to the fashion mishap that happened with me recently. Kartik and I decided to dine out few days ago and I wore my cute flower top with capris. Oooh, rocking it fine , I think to myself. So, we arrive at the restaurant, and take a table. I look around the restaurant (I usually do that) and notice the decor, the people, the food they are eating, etc. As I am doing a mental scan, I notice two women looking at me. I smile and look away, and immediately our waiter arrives with two heavy book like menus in his hand. As he bows and hands them over to us, and walks away, I lean over with the book menu in my hand and tell him about the women looking at me. He assures me its all good and asks me to pick my dish.
The dish is picked, the order is placed and the food is devoured all in a matter of an hour! And, so we are ready to leave, when the one of the ladies who was looking at me is leaving the restaurant. She walks by, stops, then turns around and comes to me and says, "Honey, your zipper is open." Oh! dang! I smile sheepishly, hoping there is no lettuce stuck in my teeth to mortify me even further and blurt out a weak "thank you."
Hmm, no wonder I ate so fast because there was actually nothing to hold me back or hold it in...if you know what I mean! So much for being fashion conscious, eh? I guess I did rock my outfit waayyy fine.

I have been craving for a really good bagel for sometime. Yeah, nicely toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with loads of vegetable cream cheese. Yumm....need to head over to NYC to stop over at H&H for some serious crave-busting! :)

Creativelive: Whack on the side of your head...like really

I have found a teacher! Yes, have found a teacher and an awesome classroom. Ok, ok, the geek in me gets really excited about anything to do with books, courses, et al. And you know, its like I have found my own personal posse (in an effort to sound cool :)) with boatloads of information, and because its my own posse - well, its for FREE! Ok, so a few weeks ago I signed up for a real-time wedding photography workshop and at first I was like who would have the time, then hemmed and hawwed a bit, and finally signed up for it. The other thing I had to make sure was that there was no catch or funny detail going on. I mean all through the internet there are tons of "buy this and get that....free only if you don't like it after paying $100 for it.." So you can imagine my concern. But, all these were quelled immediately when I got an email from the website confirming my "class" and I didn't have to click unnecessary links and whatnots.

The classroom I am talking about is CREATIVELIVE and they offer all sorts of courses on creativity. And, the teacher - well, he/she is an expert in that particular creative field. So, you have Designing Website, Photography, Photoshop CS5, Watercolor (yes!), Creating Ebooks, etc. classes taught LIVE by professionals in each of these areas - sometimes the courses run for a few days and sometimes even for a month! And again, they are free - not to pay anything - nada - zilch! But, the way they make money is if you would like to purchase the recorded sessions. That's all. Simple.

If anyone of you have a fire burning in them to learn something new, cool and different, give this classroom a try. You will definitely come out feeling like one heck of a smart student!

What happens on Hudson, stays on Hudson

As you recall, the view from my apartment is that of Manhattan's sky line and the Hudson river. So, even if I am just lying in my bed, acting all lazy, I can just sit and relax and enjoy the dance of the ships on the river. Its so interesting to see all different kinds of boats, ships, yachts, commercial liners cruising down the Hudson and zig zagging their way through the crowded (sometimes) river. Oh, I bet you, at times it looks like a highway! :)
So, one day, while enjoying such view (yeah, you can roll your eyes, but water and boats makes for an enjoyable view) I noticed two very different boats approaching each other. Well, let's just say that one of them was doing the approaching more than the other. It was a sail boat and a speed motor boat. I first noticed the sail boat...the sun shining down on its sail and the sailor (is that what you would call the person handling the boat..oh, well) perhaps lying lazily on the deck and sipping on margarita or beer. What a calming way to spend a weekend afternoon. Then within minutes I noticed a motor boat speeding through as if there is no tomorrow. Barely touching the surface of the water and see-sawing at high speed, the motor boat seemed like it was on a mission. Now, now, the mission could be to save the world or the opposite. Anyhow, so as this boat approached the sail boat, my heart almost jumped out and I thought the worse. But, nothing dramatic or you-tube worthy happened, for the motor boat just zoomed past by the sail boat and the sail boat continued to dilly dally like a crazy drunk on the river. It rocked a little and then continued to cruise calmly... I bet the sailor continued to sip on this margarita or beer too!

Fall is here...umm, well almost

Well, Fall is everywhere. I mean, I open any fashion magazine, and lo! there are ads and fashion shoots of fall wear. You know I always felt intrigued by the whole concept of launching Fall season right in the middle of hot, sunny, sweaty days. I mean most of us can't even stand to wear normal cotton clothes, forget the fur and the wool. But, hey, there are tons of fashionable and style setters out there, so perhaps they need to plan ahead, etc. And, then ofcourse, there is business to be done and money to be made. Nothing wrong with that...just saying.
So, for all my fashionably cool lovelies, here's one shoot that I instantly fell in love with, and it stars none other than the gorgeous Hillary Rhoda for Blanco2010 collection. This woman is pure rawrrrrr! But most of all, I liked that one really didn't have to look like buried under coats and sweaters to rock the Fall look.

My little efforts

A while back when I had gone to attend a photography meetup, I had asked two of my fellow joiners if they could pose for my camera. It was nerve racking at first to bring it up, but then I finally came over my shyness and just asked, "Umm, I am actually tired of taking pictures of the flowers and trees and want to add variety to my practice..do you guys mind being the subject of my camera." I let out a deep breath when I finished asking - phew!. Worst they would have said no, but to my surprise and excitement (ofcourse) they said "yes" and so I went on a shooting spree. So, here are some pics of Fawn and Tobia...(again, thank you both for modeling for me although I know how awkward you guys were feeling!)
Oh, and did I tell you that they are good photographers too. Woohoo!

Enjoying Summer via Lychees

Its summer time, and I am gorging on Lychees like my life depends on them. The sweet nectar hidden inside the rough edgy shell is totally worth the pain to peel it. The minute the peel comes off, the juice from the fruit splashes around my hand and in a second its in my mouth. Oh, delish!! You just cannot go wrong with a bowl of lychees on a hot summer day....trust me :)

Visiting Princeton

Last weekend, Kartik and I went to Princeton. It was a fun Saturday as we perused the campus of the famed college and then walked through its quaint little downtown. Visiting one of the masonic buildings covered with ivy, I wondered if the students studying here realized how beautiful everything was around them as they rushed from one building to another to submit their assignment or perhaps to attend a chemistry experiment. As I stood near another building with a huge oak door, I let my hands caress the carvings of rivets and iron and felt the grandeur of it all. I then held the heavy brass door knob and wondered if anyone uses it all.
Walking a bit further, we came across a giant bell, used in old times perhaps to ring in a new class period, still standing on its original pedestal, rustic from time. I went up close to see if I could read history on it, to see if it would tell me stories of bygone times when it was first installed. A little while later, exhausted from walking the huge grounds, Kartik and I sat under the shade of a huge Sycamore tree, allowing the warm summer air to cool our bodies as it flowed through the leaves and branches. We watched other tourists with their huge camera lugged around their necks, and noticed that they were as mesmerized with the impact of Princeton as we were.

I get scared. Insecure. Frightened. Of the future. When I don't see the answers or a clear path in front of me, I feel lost. So, I practice positive thinking. It sounds so simple that sometimes I wonder if its even working, but it does. The mind is a leisure playground for sad or bad thoughts -- conditioned over years -- and the minute you show these thoughts an 'exit' sign, they become like little kids and throw tantrums to stay and keep playing in the mind playground. It takes practice and patience with oneself to give them the boot and order them to leave. As I was saying, positive thinking is the best thing that's out there. Its tough I will agree because when my mind is going down the drain then I have to force myself to think of a good outcome and remind myself that even if I don't see the desired result right now, its out there waiting for me. And, that it will be mine soon. I then watch some funny videos on youtube to change my mood and uplift myself. I also then read a lot of inspirational stories that reminds me that miracles do happen. All you have to do is believe. Just believe.

In the mood for some fashion

I just feel like sharing. I don't know why, but I just feel like. So, I present to thee some knock-out wedding trousseau from Pakistan designers. I remember, when I was looking for a bridal dress for moi, I searched online like crazy - during downtime at work, making sure no one saw me surfing the net when I was supposed to prepare a report or late night at home, when I just couldn't sleep. Through this fervent digging, I finally realized that there was a very poor presence of traditional designer wear online, save a handful of sites that do provide some buying opportunities. And, then the prices were truly obnoxious. Anywho, in this search frenzy, I chanced upon a Pakistani bridal wear site, Bargello.com and I fell in love with the some of their styles. Infact, in the pictures, everything was soo perfect - the hair, the makeup, the jewelery and ofcourse the trousseau. Oh, I remember thinking I would use this website as my wedding inspiration. But, that was sometime ago!
So, as I said, I dunno why now, but I feel like sharing the styles I liked, with you. Perhaps, I am in the mood for some glamor... :)

The IRS is really annoying! Kartik and I are such law abiding citizens and we always ensure that our taxes are taken care of to the 't'. But, no, we get a mail from IRS telling us we owe them certain amount. Aaargh!!! Because its not fair. Aaargh! Aaargh! Because there is no customer service at IRS to hear our plea!

The Buddha taught me something

I recently saw a documentary on Buddha on Pbs, called quite obviously and plainly, The Buddha and I was blown away by it. The film wasn't all special effects a la Avatar or had any fancy animation, but it definitely captured my interest till the very end, so much so that I hoped that even after the end titles had started to run, that there would be some more story.
I have read Herman Hess's Siddhartha as well and the book talks eloquently about the life of Siddhartha and how he came about to Buddha as we all know it. But, it was a totally different experience seeing the documentary because there was insightful commentary from learned people from different walks of life - little titbits that I wouldn't have access to otherwise. One of the things that stood out and that had me thinking was when Buddha is out in search of knowledge/religion that will allow him to find himself, find the truth and then he comes across the Hindu religion. He realizes that the religion was good but people gave far too much importance to the rituals than to understanding what the religion really meant...so much that they lost the meaning/purpose of their devotion to the Gods and Goddesses.
Now, I think this is a very important point that the documentary brought up because I have noticed it as well but didn't have a chance to discuss it. See, the thing is that if we do not perform a ritual the correct way then we feel that our prayers wouldn't be answered right away or in the right context. Thus, our connection with God takes a back seat and we are left worrying about the consequences. Instead, if we spent time trying to establish our soul's connection with the Supreme power then we have really made progress in our efforts. But, I guess we all fail to make this judgement. Hinduism is filled with rituals upon rituals and if a common man (who is not a priest) tries to purify himself with performing endless rituals, then I think somewhere the whole purpose of connecting with God is lost and one is left with nothing but despair.
So, the way I have tried to implement this newly learned knowledge is to remember to observe myself when at a temple. If, say, I find myself offering fruits on the left side of a murti (idol) as opposed to right side and thinking that I made a mistake - well, hello hello, I will correct myself and remind myself that it doesn't matter what side its offered at as long as its offered with a good heart and pure intentions. After all, its all about connecting with God and not the rituals!

Summertime means only one thing

Today I had the most delicious mango ever. Its called Mango from Haiti, it looks green in color, but don't be fooled. Inside lies the sweetest, juiciest nectar ever!!The way to eat it, is not to cut it up, but to roll it in your hands till it's a bit soft, then to bite the top off and suck on it like a candy or lolly. Oh, its too yummmm. Reminds me of summertime in India, when I used to be at my nani's (grandma) house and all my cousins used to gather there for summer vacation. We each got one mango and had to make sure we enjoyed it and finished it properly, because well, we only got one mango. It was that taste of juicy mango that lingered long after we had finished our quota and that hot sweaty summer day that made it totally worth it. Yeay for Mangoes in Summer!

The First Step: Street Fair

Banno Raani recently participated in the first fair of 2010 at a NY Street Fair. It was good, but it did not target our right clients. I guess some things you have to try first and then decide whether its for you or not. You cannot just make a judgement and then claim its' no good. So, it was definitely an eye opener for us to understand what is the right platform for Banno Raani. Although our jewelery was bought, and admired by everyone who stopped by our booth, we still didn't get the type of exhilirating response that we were looking for. But, hey, it was a step forward and that's what matters. Until you don't take a step, how will you walk and until you don't walk, how will you run. Right??

A Poem

I have a habit. A weird habit, if you will. Sometimes when I think too much, I will write a poem. In one go. No revisions and no editing. I know, I know, you must be thinking - "What? Does she think she is a poet extraordinaire?" Well, lovelies, I am not, but I am being honest about how I let my thoughts and feelings flow into words. And, if you find a lot of errors, well, I guess, that was expected. :)
So, digging through my diary (yes, I still maintain a dear diary), I found this poem I had written a few years ago and I would like to share with you. Sorry, it has no title... :)

They bump into each other
Without acknowledging
But, they were destined to meet.
Sometimes they go straight,

The legacy of The Alchemist

I have been re-reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and it's like I am reading it for the first time. Each line, each character, each dialog is always a reminder to live a life to its fullest. I feel so energized by this book that I want to get up and make a difference in this world. Even while wearing my pajamas!
Paulo has squeezed all the best phrases, idioms, examples in this one simple novel and I cannot imagine what state he must have been to write such explosive material. This book is truly inspiring and gives so much food for one to ponder his/her life and make it the best it can be.
If you haven't read it, please beg, borrow or steal...err, no no stealing! but, you get the point. Go to a library and spend a lazy afternoon absorbing the lessons from this book or if you are traveling by air/train - pack it in your handbag, and you will not be sorry!

I have been meaning to write about this for a while, and then when it comes to blogging, my mind goes blank and I wonder what I should opine about. So, this time around I made sure I had this on the top of my list. Ok, ok, here we go lovelies.

While perusing Elle magazine, I came across an ad for a fan whose product and perhaps company name is "Big Ass Fans" Its the ceiling fan and not the sports or celebrity enthusiasts that this product refers too. And no, I am not making this up nor I am kidding. When it comes to names, something like, Awesome Fans is not a bad name although one can be a bit more creative. Umm, Airy Fans - still ok, but Big Ass Fans?? Well, the thing is that this particular type of Fan is really huge so what they have done is named the product on the general reaction one would have on seeing the size of fan. Hmm, pretty neat marketing idea!

Ombre Magnificence

I couldn't sleep last night and so I found myself awake (with groggy eyes ofcourse) at 4:50 am. Yes, exactly that time as I looked at the alarm clock when my sleep betrayed me. And, as I looked outside my window at the horizon, my eyes popped open wide. Before me lay an ombre magnificence of peachy yellow, orange in the sky with a deep contrast to baby blue strokes in river. It was just stunning. The sun had just started to peep out of Manhattan skyline and the whole sky radiated in the fresh, untouched splendor of morning light. Ooh, it was such a beautiful scene that I stood by the window trying to understand how does nature do this every single day. Every single day, lovelies!! And, then as if my mind had enough distractions, my eyes started to get groggy and loopy again. And, within seconds I was snor...errr sleeping! I tell you I had the most beautiful sleep ever with rainbow colored dreams made of forests with deep blue foilage and animals that look like peaches and oranges. Wonder where these came from??? :)

Of Silly thoughts and Crazy shock~

So I prepared myself a very delicious, a very healthy vegetable soup. Very easy too. Just take spinach, potato, carrot, tomato, ginger, and boil all of them together. When they are soft and done, grind them to a thin paste in the mixer - add salt and little lemon juice and while serving add a little wedge of butter. Voila! You have the most delish soup evah! Really.
Oh, I get distracted so easily. What I was trying to say was that as I got ready to enjoy the yumm soup, I thought sipping it while sitting on the sofa and watching just a little bit of food network would take the experience to the whole next level. Alright, so I pour the soup in a soup bowl and sit with it on my white sofa. Now, I just had a fleeting thought of how my sofa would look like if I accidentally dropped the soup on it. Yes, just a fleeting thought. This kinda' scared me so I ran to get a plate to keep under the bowl because I didn't want the soup bowl to slip from my hand in the event it got a little hot for me to hold (the soup was boiling, I tell you). Ah, mission accomplished and I sat on the sofa with a huge grin on my face, and ready to savor the delicious dish. I took a sip and swooned - it was that good. Then the phone rang and I placed the soup bowl+plate on the arm of my sofa and ran to get the phone. It was ma, spoke to her for few minutes and then was back to enoy my soupy soup!
As I picked up the plate, the bowl twisted and turned, and just as I thought the worst was over...BAM! went the soup on my sofa. Oh God!! I was paralyzed for like 5 seconds, and I didn't know what to do. I kept looking at the huge spill on the sofa, then at the soup bowl and then up at the ceiling and I kept doing this for few seconds not knowing what to do. Oh, lovelies, I was paralyzed with fear, with regret, with anger. And then it struck me that I had to do something, so I ran got Shout from the closet and scrubbed the hell out of the sofa stain. I scrubbed so religiously as if my life depended on it. oooh, what an ordeal. After like eons, I finally sat down in peace and calm, and finished my soup. This time, I sat on the floor (we have floor seating) and drank my soup like a nice girl.

So, when I think back on this incident, I can't imagine how utterly shocked I was that I couldn't even move. This is probably what feels like when people say that their mind stops working when they face their fear or whatever. And, I can confirm that this is soo true. Plus, AARGHH!! no, make that double AARRGH! for my stupid thought prior to the spill. If I hadn't thought it, it wouldn't have happened! Verrry important to have good thoughts!!

UPDATE: There is a very light stain now, but its there and it glares back at me reminding me of my silly thoughts, and my crazy shock!

Yesterday I visited my ex-colleagues at work. It was nice to see them after 2.5 months. As I walked around the floor, looking through each cubicle dressed up in personal items and paper galore, I could only think, "Everything has changed so much, yet nothing has really changed."

I love clothes. No, make that gorgeous, colorful, glamorous, intricately handcrafted luxurious clothes. Yeah, that's more like it. So, while I crave a Ritu Kumar every now and then (remember here), I am also a huuuge fan of the old world charm of Meera and Muzaffar Ali - the designer duo who do an incredible job with gota work, chikan embroidery and classic cuts. Here are a few pieces from one of their recent collections that I liked:

And, then there is a new, relatively new that is, designer who has piqued my interest with his playful designs and knack for something "different". Well, me likee Anand Kabra. Check out some of his pieces that I found divine..

I want all of these and I want them NOW!!!! I would sooo wear these clothes anytime...yeah, even while walking nonchalantly in the mall and letting the heads turn! :)

Photographer finally!

Remember how I keep harping about my photography passion, and how I want to take it to another level? Well, I have been getting opportunities to take pictures at events and birthday celebrations, and so I am one big happy camper. Ok, not big as in BIG, but you get the point? (yeah, what a lame pj, but blame it on afternoon drag).
Anywho, remember also I told you about visiting my cousin in VA to celebrate his son's first birthday? Say hello to the official photographer of the event...moi!! Oh, I was super psyched when Renu (my sil) asked me to be the photographer for the party because she liked my style. I had such fun shooting people...with my camera, and catching them in their most natural state. Ok, I will stop blah-blahing about how good I am and let you see for yourself...and, ofcourse comments and email hugs are more than welcome!! Here we go...

They sky, the air, the sun

I have been walking regularly these days, you know, to keep my curves under control, but today was a beautiful day to walk. Not that every other day isn't, but the sky, the air, the sun were extra lovely today. I took my usual route and noticed that the sky was a deep hue of gray, as if there was a major smoke building up, but the air was crisp, warm and cold, like a fudge ice cream with nuts. As I was turning the corner of the walkway, I noticed that the grey clouds were colliding rather urgently with each other and I knew what was in store next. But, I kept walking, sipping from the water bottle I held in the right hand.

The sun sparkled like a huge amber crystal on the left side of me, while the grey smoky clouds slow danced on my right side. And, here I was walking in the middle of this spectacle with nothing but my thoughts and feelings...and oh, the water bottle ofcourse. Just as I was contemplating my dreams, the clouds decided to lighten up a bit and drop their heavy weight. I still kept walking. The left side of my face was hot from the smoldering sun, while the left side was drenched in the runny rain falling like a marathon runner. I tell you it was truly beautiful.

But, soon the grey clouds gulped the sun and it all came down like one giant shower. I thought to myself, I can take this. Its not that cold and the water feels good on my skin, so keep walking. And, I did. But as if on queue, the rain stopped, and a out of nowhere, a rainbow emerged in the sky. My heart jumped with joy, almost like a kid, and I almost screamed "Look everyone - a Rainbow" but instead I went by the water and stood there, staring and admiring another spectacle of nature and just reveling in the joy of it all. The sky, the air, the sun!

As I was searching fervently to find yummy sweet eateries, I came across this really beautiful place in Paris that serves equally stunning desserts. Ok, I could write a para describing the cute colors of the macaroons or the elegant packing of the desserts, but I thought why not share a picture or two or four with you. With that, Ladies and Gentleman, let me introduce you to Carette - a mouthwatering tea and treats place in Place des Vosges, Paris. Now, other than these sweet delights playing games with my palate, they also serve as inspiration to me on how to present products, package them and make them truly desirable. This is the image Shikha and I are working on with Banno Raani.

Driving around on Memorial Day

For the memorial day weekend, I went to VA for my nephew's first birthday. Please note, the usage of 'I' as opposed to 'we' because Kartik did not go with me. He was at home studying for his exam (CFA) and so he needed to stay back and crunch those monster problems!

Well, not that I went alone. Ofcourse, there was my family, my sister and her family and my aunt and her daughter who recently came from India. We drove there so I had a good time - actually I always have a good time on road trips. We talked, passed around chatpata snacks to each other, then talked some more with our mouths full, drank coke, dozed off a bit, stopped over to freshen up...it was fun.

When we finally reached my cousin's house, we felt relieved because now we could lay down and relax. So, after chit chatting for a while, all of us ran upstairs to grab our respective sleeping spaces. Mom and me got a springy bed, which really sprang us up and down all night. Not that bad - we did get some decent sleep. The party was the next day and it was a lot of fun. The party was held at my sister in-law's friend's mansion, yeah, mansion, it was huge and beautiful. We played games, and met new people. Mostly all had very young kids so the conversations were very basic, at least from my side, and then something or the other had to be changed for their babies, so they had to take a leave. It was only 8pm and I was already hungry, so I walked around acting busy, taking pictures (yeah, I was the official photographer of the party...yeayy) trying to divert my mind off food. Then I was told the food was served, I placed my camera on the a side table and ran like never before...ok, kidding, just walked swiftly towards the food area.

The night passed by nicely and we were ready to take leave. I packed my camera, bade farewell, and was off to my cousin's house. When all of us reached there, we again joked, chit-chatted for an hour or so and then it was time to sleep on the spring...bed that is. The next day we had to get up early because it was Memorial Day and we had to leave to beat the traffic. Long story short, we did not and were stuck in the stop and go traffic on NJ Turnpike (oh, NJ Turnpike, I despise you soo much). Instead of 5 hours, it took us 9 hours to get home. Papa had to drop me on the way back, so I asked him, mom, my aunt and her daughter to stay at my place, unless they were interested to deal with 4 more hours of traffic.

So, yeah, Memorial Day was spent on the road, behind endless cars with their flashing break lights. It was irritating, tiring and plain boring. But as long as I had my family there and chatpata snack to pass around, who cares!

My brain is frozen. Yes, like the one you get when you sip on your slushee drink a bit too fast. Oh, the pain for that few seconds is like a severe migrane attack, but the taste in the mouth is so sweet, its almost like enduring sweet pain!

Anyways, I guess my brain is also fried. Like a shrimp tempura - nice and crispy. Have been looking like craaazy for an event space to host Banno Raani's Summer Extravaganza and its has been a process, I tell you. At first, it was like doing tele marketing - making cold calls to all the places I could to find out about availability and pricing, but now, I have kinda gotten used to it so I am not shy in reaching out to scour places. Its a lot of work people, and it can drain your enthusiasm...but, I am hangin' because I am always reminded why I resigned - to pursue my dreams - so I cannot backout now. I am blessed to be doing what I love, and nothing will faze me! Hang in there with me...won't you? :)

What's in a weather

The weather is getting warmer, and it really makes me smile. I can walk without layers of jackets piled on and it feels wonderful.
Have you noticed how weather is the best topic for small talk. I mean whenever I met a colleague of mine in an elevator, by default I would just blurt out, "How gorgeous/crappy is the weather?" or "When will spring/summer come, it high time now?" Ok, don't look at this post and go "Grrr, is she small talking here." Well my answer lovelies: yes and no.
My brain is fried right now, so I cannot talk deep, philosophical stuff, but at the same time I really want you to know how happy I am here that when I check up weather.com, I see 79F and 80F....aren't you too?? C'mon...

Smoky Alice is gorgeous

When I came across this brand, and looked at their product's pictures, I knew that this is something I would like to represent for Banno Raani as well. I mean how focused, clean and crisp are these marketing pics? Their line of products are so elegant and detailed in themselves that nothing flashy is required to add that "wow" factor.

Smoky Alice is truly a boutique to reckon with. Their products/styling want to make you scream "I want it, I want it all." Well, I certainly am already screaming that!!

Summer Footwear

One of my friends asked, "So, Shivi, you did a post on summer make up and summer dresses, whatever happened to summer shoes?? You know, people love shoes.!" And, I was like , "Hey, Sal, that's the most intelligent thing you have said, like, ever." Umm, not to forget that this friend of mine is an MD in making, but whatever, she is my friend, and I can say anything to her!!! HAAAAHHAA..love you Sal!

Sometimes I wonder, how she does it. The cooking, the cleaning and the job thing.Whenever I ask her, she just says, "wait till you become a mother, you will see, it all happens naturally." Hmm, I guess I will have to become one to understand one.
Ma, watch out, I am coming over so please make me that spicy gobi (cauliflower), halva and gol gappe!!

Quite a few things have been on my mind, so I want to quickly jot them down here at the expense of forgetting:

What type of flowers should I pick for the summer Banno Raani event?
Why is my hair turning white, and what should I eat/do to avoid it? Hmm, remember to ask Nani maa (grandma)
Need to buy glass bottles for storing water in the fridge, plastic ones give off a weird smell and taste
What makes for a catchy logo - research online and catalogues
There should be a fine for everyone who spits on the streets - yeah, like serious fine
Need to call Shruti, Shilpa in India -- they will kill me for I haven't spoken to them in ages
Buy baby shower gift or gift card for this Sunday
Keep questioning because that's the only way things can be made better
What in the world is a Tea Party? And, why do we need it? And why is Sarah Palin talking again?
Why do people who pretend to be "busy" are regularly updating their facebook status or playing those weird farmville game? I mean its a clear giveaway...

Happy 1 Year! We both have come this far...who knew I could be ok talking out or writing openly my thoughts and feelings. But, you have been super good to me and sooo accommodating. The valuable relationships I have built along the way from all over the world has humbled me...because I can now see how connected we are. Thank you Dear Blog for being my perfect partner..and here's to many more posts to come.

A big thank you also for being the force that pushes me to write, share and be able to inspire in whatever little ways I can. Your emails, thoughts have been read and re read a million times (I can't believe someone in Russia likes what I write!!) because they were too good to be true. I am blessed, and that's how I see it. When I saw what he does with his pictures, my mouth fell open. You know, when you are sitting in the audience and the magician actually saws off his assistant's foot right in front of you and you sit there with your mouth open...yeah, well that kind. Not only that, my eyes popped open wide too,and I just kept wondering, "how does this man do it?"
Dave Hill is a man who knows how to shoot ---err, with camera that is. He constantly challenges the creative aspect behind photography and therefore produces stunning images that resonates deeply with his style. Yes, he uses Photoshop to add that magical, surreal touch to his pictures, but if you forget about the background for a second and just focus on the subjects (the people), you will realize it really takes balls to get the kind of expression and look like he does.

Dear Dave, if you ever read this, you are Ralph Lauren of Photography - you bring so much style, charisma and ass-kicking to your pics (sometimes, literally :) ). I am so glad I was introduced to your style of creating art, and everytime I see your awesome, truly unique concept pics, it blows water out of my fish tank! (ha, did I just make up that phrase?? But, its get's the point, so..)

Banno Raani collection: editorial style

Which one is better...well, it depends really!

People and friends ask me, is Kundan better or Polki? I, acting all like a pro, arch my eyebrows, straighten my back and try to speak with a British accent, you know, just to sound serious and all. And then say like its the most obvious answer, "It depends."

Now now, I don't want to confuse or anything, but really it depends on your taste. Before, we discuss that, let's get cracking on what is Kundan and what is Polki. So, here goes lovelies:

Kundan: Receiving a huge patronage during the Mughal era, Kundan soon took over the jewelry of choice amongst the Kinds and noblemen in India. It's has been regarded as one of the oldest forms of jewelry making in India, and is a method of gem setting wherein a pure gold foil is inserted between the precious stone and its mount. The way its done is that the jewelry piece is first shaped by specialized craftsmen, and then holes are cut in the metal to place the precious stones like diamonds, emeralds, rubies, etc. When the stones are to be set in the desired position, lac is inserted in the back to place them perfectly in their place. But, if just the lac is to be used, then it would be visible from the front, therefore, Kundan, a highly refined gold foil is used to cover the lac, and then the precious stone is pushed into the Kundan.

If you have noticed, Kundan really goes well with Meenakari work. Usually, a Kundan necklace or earring or ring would have meenakari work in the back. Hmm, so what is Meernakari? Well, its a method of jewelry making that involves enamel. Let's see some Kundan pieces:

Now, onto Polki

Polki: It is the same thing as Kundan. Yeah, that's right. Only difference is that Polki is an uncut diamond. It's setting is the same as Kundan only that is made of uncut or untouched diamond, which is why it is wayyy more expensive than Kundan. Ofcourse, these days we get glass polki, which makes the jewelry style affordable, and both you and I can rock some really unique pieces. Here are some pics:

So, if you ask me, which one - Kundan or Polki? I would still say "it depends" and trust me it depends on the moolah factor!! :)

Observing Competition

Sometimes all I need to do is breathe, especially in the face of competition. I mean how easy it is to spew hot fumes when you see your competitor providing better products than you or doing something soo cool that it knocks your socks off!! The anger, the jealousy, the insecurity almost makes you think bad of them and you hope that something happens to their products/services that their customers stop liking them!! Right ? Right? Well, I have been there lovelies and it is not a good feeling. But, you know what?I always question this feeling and wonder what's the best way to deal with it.
So, I thought a lot about it. Observed myself, and came up with the following when dealing with competition:

Competition is good. It forces us to think outside the box, it enables us to challenge our assumptions, our status quo and thus, makes us do an even better job
Competition is fun. Imagine if what we did was the only best thing around, then how would we enjoy the whole process of being in the business, we wouldn't know how to sell with all the bells and whistles
Competition is healthy. If we see it as an source of inspiration as opposed to a reason for insecurity, then we are making our lives, our product/service so much better that we infact end up giving back

Hmm...yeah, so that's where I am with competition right now. When I see Amrita Singh and Rosena Sammi, I see them as inspiration, as partners who are infusing the market with beautiful, intricate and unique designs, just the way I am!!

Happy Mother's Day

Its a very special relationship, and a very unique one. Its the purest of all relationships. When I was younger, I wanted to be like her - have beautiful curly hair, wear high heels and apply the same shade of lipstick.
I remember, when Shikha and I were in fourth and fifth grade respectively, she used to take an English dictionary test everyday. Each day we were supposed to learn the spelling and meaning of words from one page of dictionary (following up from previous day), and then she used to take a mini test, even though she wasn't so good at English herself (and, hey, if we messed up the test ---oooh boy!!). She taught us the perfect manners when sitting down for dinner or when visiting someone's house (don't touch that appetizer plate unless its offered to you) and after she returned from a tiring day at work, she made sure that we finished our homework.
That was then.
Today, when I visit her, and scream "tea" from the TV room, she will make it without flinching. She smothers me with so much food and love that I actually gain 10 lb just in one visit :)

Ma, I cannot thank you enough for being such a role model and such a wonderful person. You have taught both Shikha and I so much that we are smarter, wiser and happier because of you. Lots of love and hugs to you on Mother's day! You deserve only the best!!
